Newcastle‘s busy fixture schedule continues as they return to English Premier League action on Saturday, taking on Everton at St James’ Park.
The Magpies enjoyed a kick about in front of 50,000 fans on Tuesday night, defeating Qarabag 3-2 (9-3 aggregate) to qualify for the UEFA Champions League Last-16.
A two-legged tie against Chelsea or Barcelona awaits manager Eddie Howe’s side, who need to get back to winning ways in the Premier League.
Last weekend’s defeat away to Manchester City was an admirable performance, in which a spirited display pushed the title challengers all the way to the end.
However, the result means that Newcastle have won only one of their last six Premier League matches and that came against Tottenham, so there’s automatically an asterisk next to that victory.
Everton had been in brilliant form prior to back-to-back defeats in their latest two Premier League games.
The Toffees had lost only in eight league matches before losing 2-1 at home to Bournemouth and 1-0 when hosting Manchester United.
Manager David Moyes’ side will arrive here sitting ninth in the Premier League table, one point above Newcastle and just three points adrift from a UEFA Conference place.
What are the best bets for Newcastle vs Everton?
Newcastle to win, Under 2.5 goals
As a Newcastle fan, I dread this match. And it’s mainly because Moyes’ pragmatic style of play is a nightmare to play against for an ‘Eddie Howe side.’
The visitors won this fixture 1-0 on the final day of last season and held Newcastle to a 1-1 draw the season prior, showing how tight an affair this match can be.
Newcastle’s form needs to change at some point, though. And with Everton faltering in consecutive matches leading up to this game, I will back the Magpies to get the job done.
Newcastle to win the match and under 2.5 goals is my best bet for this game, given that five of the last eight head-to-head matches have seen less than three goals scored.
