It is the second time this week that these two sides will face each other, after Barcelona defeated Atletico 2-1 away from home on Saturday night.

The win saw manager Hansi Flick’s side extend their lead at the top of the La Liga table, with the gap to Real Madrid now five points.

Barcelona will return to European action after they overcame a spirited Newcastle United in the previous round, as they defeated the English side 9-3 on aggregate.

Their 7-2 victory at the Nou Camp came courtesy of some poor defending in the second half, which gifted the Catalan giants with a place in this round of the tournament.

Atletico Madrid also knocked out English opposition, though they beat Tottenham Hotspur, which automatically comes with an asterisk beside it.

Manager Diego Simeone’s side won the first leg of the tie 5-2, which was enough to allow them a 3-2 loss in the reverse fixture.

However, they have since lost both of their subsequent matches, which came against Real Madrid and Wednesday’s opponents.
