Scotland may not have produced a performance to remember, but they did secure the result that mattered most to start their 2026 World Cup campaign.
A hard-fought 1-0 victory over Haiti gave Steve Clarke’s side their first World Cup win in 36 years and moved them to the top of Group C. More importantly, it put Scotland in a strong position to reach the knockout stages for the first time in their history.
The hero of the night was John McGinn.
After Steve Clarke admitted before kick-off that selecting the Aston Villa captain ahead of Ryan Christie was one of the toughest decisions of his managerial career, McGinn responded in the best possible way. The midfielder scored the winning goal and justified his manager’s faith when Scotland needed him most.
McGinn answers Clarke’s challenge
There was plenty of debate surrounding Scotland’s starting lineup.
Ryan Christie impressed in the friendly win over Bolivia, and many supporters expected him to keep his place. However, Clarke stuck with McGinn and publicly challenged the experienced midfielder to prove him right.
Mission accomplished.
While the goal itself was far from spectacular, McGinn once again showed his ability to deliver in crucial moments. The finish may have been scrappy, but nobody inside the stadium cared.
At major tournaments, results matter far more than style points.
Scotland struggled to find their rhythm
Despite entering the match as favourites, Scotland never looked fully comfortable.
The attacking freedom and confidence shown against Bolivia failed to appear in Boston. Instead, Scotland looked sloppy in possession and often struggled to cope with Haiti’s direct approach.
Haiti created several dangerous moments and repeatedly delivered crosses into the Scottish penalty area. Goalkeeper Angus Gunn, preferred ahead of veteran Craig Gordon, was forced into action on multiple occasions.
As the game wore on, memories of previous tournament disappointments against teams Scotland were expected to beat began to creep into the minds of supporters.
For long periods, Haiti looked capable of causing a major upset.
Gannon-Doak provides a bright spark
One of the few positives before the winning goal was Ben Gannon-Doak’s performance.
The Bournemouth winger brought energy and enthusiasm down the right flank. He constantly looked to take on defenders and inject some urgency into Scotland’s attack.
His determination was summed up perfectly when he celebrated winning a goal-kick as though Scotland had scored.
That passion was something the team needed on a frustrating night.
Meanwhile, Scott McTominay came closest to breaking the deadlock earlier when he rattled the post with a powerful effort. However, strikers Che Adams and Lawrence Shankland struggled to make an impact and received very little service throughout the match.
Bigger tests await Scotland
While Scotland can celebrate a huge victory, the performance itself raises questions.
Steve Clarke will be delighted with the three points, but he knows his side must improve significantly. Morocco and Brazil remain to come in Group C, and both teams will punish the mistakes Scotland got away with against Haiti.
Especially since the two sides played out a tense 1-1 draw in their opening game, leaving them chasing the Tartan army, who top the group.
The encouraging news is that Scotland now control their own destiny.
A point from their remaining group matches could be enough to secure qualification for the knockout rounds. That is an opportunity Scottish football has rarely enjoyed on the world stage.
For now, though, the focus belongs to John McGinn.
It was not his greatest game, and it was certainly not his best goal. Yet once again, when Scotland needed a hero, McGinn stepped forward and delivered.
