The question is no longer whether they belong here. It is whether either side can take control of the group before the final round of matches.
The USA looked exactly how many expected in their opener. Fast, energetic and packed with attacking talent. The challenge now is proving they can deliver that level consistently.
International football has a habit of humbling teams the moment people start talking about how comfortable things look.
Australia, meanwhile, continue to be one of the most stubborn teams in tournament football. Every few years, somebody convinces themselves the Socceroos are about to struggle, and every few years, they seem to ignore those predictions and make life awkward for everyone involved.
That is why this fixture feels so appealing. The United States have the higher ceiling. Australia have spent years proving they do not care much for ceilings, floors or anyone else’s expectations.
Put those ingredients together, and you usually get a match worth watching.

The United States are past the stage where potential is enough. This squad is talented, experienced and are proving they are here to compete.
Christian Pulisic remains the star attraction. He is still the player most fans look towards when the USA need inspiration. If there is a chance to unlock the Australian defence, there is a good chance Pulisic will be involved.
Folarin Balogun should continue to lead the attack. The striker can be quiet for long periods. However, he only needs one opportunity to make an impact. Tim Weah might come in for Sergino Dest to go slightly more attacking – but I expect minimal changes, if any.
For me, Tyler Adams remains the most important player in this team. Pulisic gets the headlines. Adams does much of the hard work. When he is fit, the USA look balanced. When he is absent, things often become far more complicated.
The good news for Mauricio Pochettino is that there are no major injury concerns. After winning their opening match, there is little reason to make significant changes.
The USA were impressive in their first game. However, Australia will provide a very different challenge. The Americans may enjoy plenty of possession, but they should expect a much tougher evening.

Australia have heard the same story for years. They are supposedly short on talent. They are supposedly due for a disappointing tournament. Yet they keep proving people wrong.
That is part of what makes the Socceroos so easy to admire. They know exactly what they are. More importantly, they rarely try to be anything else.
Nestroy Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe provide pace and direct running in wide areas and were both on the scoresheet last time out against Turkey.
Jackson Irvine could also have a huge role to play. He brings energy, leadership and plenty of experience. If Australia are going to disrupt the USA’s rhythm, Irvine may come in for Mohamed Toure.
But much like I said for the USA – If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
Like their opponents, the Socceroos have no major injury concerns. That means Tony Popovic should stick with a winning formula.
Australia know they will spend periods without the ball. They probably do not mind. This is a team that seems to enjoy making matches uncomfortable for favoured opponents.

This is where things get interesting.
Both teams won their opening match. Both teams know that another victory would leave them with one foot in the knockout rounds. As a result, neither side should be short of motivation.
The USA will probably see more of the ball. That much feels predictable. Mauricio Pochettino has a squad packed with technical players, and there is enough attacking talent in this team to trouble almost any defence.
The question is whether they can turn possession into clear chances.
Australia are unlikely to lose sleep over seeing less of the ball. In fact, they often look quite comfortable when opponents are doing most of the attacking.
The Socceroos have built a reputation for staying organised, competing for every second ball and generally making matches far messier than the favourites would like.
That could become frustrating for the Americans.
The longer Australia keep the score level, the more belief they will gain. They have enough experience to stay in the game and enough quality on the counter-attack to create problems of their own.
However, I keep coming back to the attacking options available to the USA. Christian Pulisic, Folarin Balogun and co can all produce moments that change a match in an instant. Australia are a difficult team to play against. They are not always a difficult team to score against for 90 minutes.
I expect the Socceroos to make life uncomfortable. They usually do. However, the USA have looked sharp so far, and home support could make a difference if the game becomes tight.
This may not be the most entertaining match of the tournament. Australia rarely hand those out for free. Nevertheless, the Americans should have enough quality to edge it.
But don’t be surprised if Australia scrape a point out of this one.
