Chelsea have completed the signing of experienced striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion for an undisclosed fee, adding proven Premier League quality and leadership to Xabi Alonso’s squad ahead of the new season.
The 35-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge after enjoying the most prolific Premier League campaign of his career, scoring 13 league goals for Brighton last season.
With just one year remaining on his contract at the Amex Stadium, Welbeck now begins a new chapter with the Blues.
An experienced core
Chelsea’s latest addition reflects the club’s desire to complement its youthful squad with experienced players, with Alonso keen to add leadership and reliability as his side prepares to compete across multiple competitions this season.
Speaking after completing the move, Welbeck admitted joining Chelsea was a proud moment in his career.
“When you hear of the interest from Chelsea, it’s something that fills you with such immense pride,” he said, quoted on Sky Sports.
“Knowing the history of Chelsea, it’s a club that wants to win trophies and is pushing to do that every single season.
“I’m really honoured to come to a club of this stature at what feels like a really exciting time.”
Player-manager connection
The former England international also revealed that conversations with Alonso and several members of the Chelsea squad convinced him the move was the right one.
“I know a few of the boys already, and I’ve had fantastic conversations with the manager and already feel that connection,” Welbeck added.
“I’ve got that fire in my belly, and I’m ready to give it everything for this club to make everyone at Chelsea, and the supporters, proud.”
Welbeck brings a wealth of experience to Stamford Bridge, having enjoyed successful spells in the Premier League with Manchester United, Arsenal and Brighton.
His versatility across the front line, combined with his professionalism and leadership, is expected to make him a valuable presence both on and off the pitch.
