Former Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has joined Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor on a free transfer, bringing an end to a noteworthy nine-year spell at Anfield.
The Egypt international has signed a two-year contract after leaving Liverpool by mutual agreement a year before the expiry of his contract.
During his time at Anfield, Salah scored 257 goals in 442 appearances, winning multiple major honours, cementing his place as Liverpool’s third-highest goalscorer of all time.
Carragher: ‘Turkey’s level is too low’
Despite links with clubs across Europe and the Middle East, Salah has opted for Trabzonspor, where he is expected to become the centrepiece of the Turkish club’s ambitions – both domestically and in European competition.
Speaking on Sky Sports, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher admitted he was surprised by Salah’s destination.
“I never believed he was going to go to Saudi, because number one, he’s too good for that,” Carragher said.
“I think he can be playing in Serie A. Turkey for me feels a level too low.”

Why not the Serie A
Carragher added that he expected Salah to join one of Italy’s biggest clubs.
“I was convinced he’d end up at AC Milan or Juventus or somewhere like that; maybe his wages were a problem,” Carragher surmised.
“He’s so driven, his numbers mean so much to him. I thought he’d want to play at a real prestigious club.
“To go to an AC Milan or Juventus, play at the San Siro, still playing in big games, still playing in Europe.
“Turkey just feels like… I just think he’s better than that,” Carragher added.
An established legacy
Salah leaves Liverpool as one of the defining players of the modern Premier League era, with his goals, consistency and trophy haul ensuring his legacy at Anfield is firmly secured.
