Newcastle host Bournemouth at St James’ Park on Saturday lunchtime. Matthias Jaissle is unbeaten so far. Bournemouth, meanwhile, seem allergic to holding a lead.

Newcastle led Liverpool twice on the opening weekend. Twice, Liverpool clawed it back. A 99th-minute Dominik Szoboszlai penalty eventually made it 2-2.

There was no such luck involved in the follow-up, though. Newcastle went to Tottenham and won 2-0, with goals from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa doing the damage.

Bournemouth are still adjusting to life after Andoni Iraola. New boss Marco Rose has already seen two leads vanish.

Man City turned a losing scoreline around late on to win 2-1. Everton snatched a stoppage-time equaliser too, for a 1-1 draw at Vitality Stadium. Two games in, and the Cherries look like a team that can’t quite bring itself to see out a win.

St James’ Park isn’t the nicest of places to go at the best of times, let alone when you’re feeling the pressure a bit.

What are the best picks for Newcastle vs Bournemouth?

Newcastle United to win

Newcastle are one of the in-form teams in the league right now, results-wise at least

Jaissle looks settled. His side look sharp. And after nearly beating Liverpool on his first day in the job, followed by victory at Spurs, a home game against a leaky Bournemouth side should suit him nicely.

This one’s at St James’ Park too, so Bournemouth’s away form barely factors in.

What matters more is their habit of switching off late. That’s a dangerous trait to bring to Tyneside.

Over 2.5 goals

Neither defence has been especially tidy so far.

Newcastle have scored four and conceded two in two games. Bournemouth have found the net twice themselves, even while leaking goals at the other end.

The Magpies have also scored two goals in both their opening games so far. I don’t think they keep a clean sheet here either.

That leaves over 2.5 goals where I land on this one.

Yoane Wissa to score anytime

Wissa has hit the ground running at Newcastle – well, this season maybe not last.

He got on the scoresheet at Tottenham and looks like a man enjoying his new surroundings.

Against a Bournemouth defence that keeps finding new ways to concede, he’ll like his chances again.

Where can I watch Newcastle vs Bournemouth?

Newcastle United vs Bournemouth kicks off at 12:30pm BST on Saturday, 5 September at St James’ Park.

What have the managers said?

Matthias Jaissle:

Jaissle couldn’t hide his delight after the win in London. He’ll want more of the same in front of his own fans this weekend.

“Incredible. Really proud. We are really proud as a club and coaching staff to see the team delivering on the pitch. The DNA of Newcastle United is a good fit to the playing style I like to see.”

Marco Rose:

Rose was frustrated to drop points late again, but he still found plenty to like from the Everton draw.

“It was mostly about the result, but as a coach you evaluate the performance as well, and in most phases of the game it was really good. I saw so many positive things. Like last week, we would like to present our fans with a win, but we will have to wait one more week.”

What is Newcastle’s predicted team?

(4-2-3-1) Hornicek — Dedic, Thiaw, Botman, Hall — Gonzalez, Miley — Elanga, Willock, Barnes — Wissa.

Injured: Burn, Livramento, Joelinton, Osula.

What is Bournemouth’s predicted team?

(4-2-3-1) Petrovic — Smith, Hill, Silva, Truffert — Cook, Scott — Rayan, Kluivert, Tavernier — Evanilson.

Injured: Araujo, Milosavljevic, Adli, Kroupi.

Score prediction: Newcastle United 2-1 Bournemouth

Newcastle look sharper and more settled right now. Home advantage should count for plenty against a Bournemouth side still finding its feet under a new boss.

Don’t bank on a clean sheet, mind. If Bournemouth are conceding again, current form says it’ll probably arrive with the last kick of the game.
