Gakpo-Isak combination helps Liverpool to easy win over inept Ipswich

Liverpool’s one-two punch of Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak helped their side to an easy win on Friday night over an Ipswich Town team that looks out of their depth at Premier League level.

Gakpo assisted both of Isak’s goals with brilliant line-breaking passing, with the Swede’s deft touch in his finishing proving a different class for an Ipswich backline in disarray.

Ipswich conceded five goals against Manchester United in Gameweek two, and after a performance with no upside against Liverpool just a week later, it’s seemingly set to be a gruelling season for Gary O’Neil and his men.

Three in three

“We were waiting for the first win, and we were talking about starting the game good which we haven’t done recently. And we did that with two goals,” Isak told Sky Sports, who has scored three goals in three games so far this season.

“With a normal pre-season, I think we’re starting to get the way we want to play, being offensive and attacking the defence. We showed that. We scored two and could have scored more.”

Injury comeback

“It was not easy,” Isak added. “It was a long injury, a difficult season in general.

“I was thinking: I want to have a good World Cup first and then to start the season well, which I feel like I’ve done now.

“That season is kind of behind me, but it wasn’t easy.”

‘Fighting’ with him to produce more

Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola claimed he has been “fighting” with Isak to not just deliver goals and be fully fit, but to help out his team-mates on defence as well.

He said: “It’s a massive player for us. My demands will not be about the goals: he’s fit, in a good shape and he will produce the numbers.

“But my fights with him are more about other stuff, how to help the team in other situations.

“But it’s good he has played two full games and today a good amount of minutes, scoring the goals.”
