Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca in the dug-out

Man City news: Enzo Maresca addresses guilty verdict for the first time

Premier League football is back after a three-week international break, and naturally, the Manchester City charges are still the centre of attention.

The club were found guilty of 114 charges related to serious breaches of Premier League financial rules.

Man City have since appealed and maintained innocence, calling the judgment an ‘opinion’ and claiming that it “contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact and is unsafe.”

The independent commission found that the club had arranged “sham” contracts with multiple commercial partners as part of a “disguised funding scheme” to falsely inflate the club’s revenues by £830m between 2009/10 and 2017/18.

Maresca remains ‘very calm’

The negativity surrounding the club has done nothing to shake the club’s confidence, at least towards the press and the public.

Speaking to CityTV, head coach Enzo Maresca insisted that he is “very calm” despite the seriousness of the situation.

“Personally, I’m very calm, to be honest. The club has been quite clear. We trust completely the club,” said the Italian.

“We understand the noise but the focus for us is just what we can control and we can control just the football side.”

Anfield awaits

On Sunday, October 11, Manchester City will travel to Anfield to face Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool.

The two sides have had different starts to the season.

Man City have had a perfect start, winning all five games so far, comfortably atop the Premier League table.

Liverpool, however, have had three draws and two wins, and are sixth. Still, they are expected to be a tough team for Man City to face, especially at Anfield.

Maresca remains confident, though, saying: “The feeling is fantastic, to be honest. The players are excited for the next two games.

“But especially they are excited because in this moment, we are top of the league.

“The players are just focused on that. They know what we can control is the football side – they are not worried at all about different things.

“They know their profession and they know that the noise is there but they don’t care too much about the noise.

“They are just focused in this moment on how we can beat Liverpool and how, together with the fans, we can try to win at Anfield.”
