Lisandro Martínez has apologised for publicly criticising Manchester United technical director Jason Wilcox.
Martínez controversially spoke out after United’s 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday – a result that extended the club’s winless run to five games in all competitions.
The 28-year-old questioned United’s transfer policy, arguing that manager Michael Carrick needed greater backing from Wilcox.
However, the Argentina international has since sought to defuse the situation.
Martínez apologises
In a post on social media, Martínez said: “I met with the club’s leadership and the manager.
“It was a very positive conversation where we were able to exchange views and speak openly about what happened after Tuesday’s game.
“Everyone knows that I am a passionate person and that I live football with great intensity.
“The frustration of the defeat led me to express how I felt at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones.
“For that, I want to apologise.”

Moving forward
United have endured a poor start to the 2026/27 season.
A third-place finish in the Premier League last term had earned the Red Devils a return to the Champions League, but doubts remain over the strength of their squad.
While midfield was a major focus during the summer transfer window, the quality available in other positions has come under increasing scrutiny.
Martínez’s outburst reflected those concerns, although airing his grievances publicly risked adding more pressure.
His apology may now help to draw a line under the saga, allowing United to concentrate on results, with Leeds United next up in the Premier League on Sunday.
