Newcastle United have rejected an approach from Arsenal for captain Bruno Guimaraes, with the Magpies determined to keep the Brazil international despite growing interest from the Premier League champions.
The 28-year-old, who has two years remaining on his contract at St James’ Park, remains a key part of Newcastle’s plans and the club have no desire to sanction his departure this summer.
However, Sky Sports understands Arsenal are discussing whether to return with an improved offer as they continue their search for midfield reinforcements.
A Premier League standout
Guimaraes has established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders since joining Newcastle United, combining technical quality, defensive intensity and leadership to become captain of the club.
His performances have inevitably attracted interest from some of Europe’s biggest sides, with Arsenal now testing Newcastle’s resolve.
Former Premier League goalkeeper Asmir Begovic believes the transfer saga could still end with Guimaraes making the move to North London.
“I can only see this ending one way – and that’s with Bruno Guimaraes in Arsenal colours. It’s inevitable,” Begovic said on Sky Sports News’ Good Morning Transfers.
“Bruno wants to challenge himself. He wants to play at the highest level, he wants to play in the Champions League, so I think when the Premier League champions come calling [there is only going to be one outcome] and one option here.

Taking the midfield to higher heights
“I think Bruno Guimaraes would be that kind of statement signing [for Arsenal] in the heart of that midfield to continue to push that team to higher levels,” Begovic continued.
For now, Newcastle remain resolute in their stance and are under no immediate pressure to sell one of their most influential players.
