Chelsea close in on Pep Chavarria as Xabi Alonso finds Marc Cucurella’s replacement

Chelsea are set to secure a deal for Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria, with the Blues closing in on the Spaniard as the replacement for Marc Cucurella following his move to Real Madrid.

Negotiations between the two clubs have been ongoing for more than a month, with Chelsea now expected to complete a deal worth an initial £16.3 million (€19m), plus performance-related add-ons.

The 28-year-old has been identified by head coach Xabi Alonso as the ideal successor to Cucurella, who departed Stamford Bridge in this transfer window after establishing himself as one of Chelsea’s most consistent defenders.

A key position for Chelsea to target

Replacing Cucurella was always likely to be a priority.

The Spain international’s energy, defensive reliability and ability to contribute in possession made him a key figure in Chelsea’s backline.

His departure left Alonso needing an experienced left-back capable of stepping straight into the Premier League without an extended adaptation period.

Chavarria appears to fit that profile.

The Spaniard has impressed in LaLiga with Rayo Vallecano, earning a reputation as a dependable defender who is equally comfortable operating as a traditional full-back or in a more advanced wing-back role.

His versatility is viewed as an important asset for Alonso’s tactical approach.

A shift in recruitment

The move also continues a noticeable shift in Chelsea’s recruitment strategy.

After several transfer windows focused heavily on emerging talent, the club have targeted more experienced players this summer, including Jordan Henderson, Danny Welbeck and Maxence Lacroix.

At 28, Chavarria adds further maturity to a squad Chelsea believe are ready to compete for major honours.

Sky Sports reports that the two clubs are now finalising the remaining details of the agreement, with Chelsea increasingly confident of completing the transfer in the coming days.

Should the move be finalised, Chavarria will inherit one of the most demanding roles in Chelsea’s squad.
