Chelsea sign Jordan Henderson as Trevoh Chalobah closes in on Como move

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of experienced midfielder Jordan Henderson on a free transfer, while academy graduate Trevoh Chalobah is edging closer to a permanent move to Serie A side Como.

Henderson has signed a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge after leaving Brentford by mutual consent, becoming Chelsea‘s latest experienced addition following the arrival of striker Danny Welbeck earlier this transfer window.

The move reflects head coach Xabi Alonso’s desire to continually add proven leadership to a youthful squad as the Blues prepare for the new Premier League campaign.

‘A huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down’ says Henderson

Speaking after completing the move, Henderson admitted Chelsea‘s ambition and Alonso’s influence made the decision straightforward.

“Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” Henderson said.

“I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction.

“For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going,” he added.

Defensive changes

While Chelsea have added another experienced voice to the dressing room, the club is also continuing to reshape its defensive options.

Sky Sports understands Como have agreed a deal worth an initial £25.7 million (€30m), plus a further £5.1 million (€6m) in potential add-ons, to sign defender Trevoh Chalobah.

The England international has already agreed personal terms with the Italian club, with the Italian side now working to complete the transfer.

Should Chalobah’s move be finalised, Chelsea will have strengthened both their squad profile and financial position as preparations continue for Alonso’s first campaign in charge at Stamford Bridge.
