Crystal Palace have spent the last few weeks making the Premier League’s relegation zone look increasingly like a permanent address. Liverpool, meanwhile, have managed to turn a promising recovery into another round of uncomfortable questions.
Sunday’s meeting at Selhurst Park brings together two sides badly in need of a result, although Palace’s problems are considerably more serious.
Pierre Sage’s side have lost three consecutive league matches without scoring. A 5-0 humiliation at Brighton was followed by a 2-0 home defeat against Newcastle, before Tottenham added another two goals to the Eagles’ growing list of problems.
That’s nine conceded and none scored in three matches. Hardly the ideal preparation for facing Liverpool.
Palace have slipped to 18th, with seven points from nine games. Their defensive record is particularly concerning, having conceded 21 goals already.
Liverpool aren’t exactly arriving in glorious form themselves.
Andoni Iraola’s side looked to be finding their feet after victories against Brentford and Brighton, but Arsenal brought that momentum to an abrupt halt with a 1-0 win at Anfield last Sunday.
Wednesday’s Champions League trip to Fenerbahçe made matters worse. Liverpool led 2-1 late on before collapsing to a 3-2 defeat, leaving Iraola with consecutive losses and another defensive performance to explain.
Alexander Isak has at least provided some encouragement. The Swedish striker has scored six Premier League goals, and his return to the starting lineup should give Liverpool a significant attacking threat.
Palace, meanwhile, must cope without suspended striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and injured winger Ismaïla Sarr.
There is an obvious temptation to make this a straightforward Liverpool victory, but the more interesting opportunities could lie in how the visitors exploit Palace’s defensive weaknesses.

Liverpool to win and Alexander Isak to score anytime
Rather than settling for Liverpool at a relatively short match-result price, combining an away victory with an Isak goal offers a more interesting angle.
The striker has scored six goals in nine Premier League appearances this season, accounting for more than half of Liverpool’s 11 league goals. He has registered nine shots on target from 22 attempts, making him comfortably their most productive forward.
Palace’s defensive record makes this an attractive fixture for the Swede. Sage’s side have conceded 21 goals in nine matches and have looked particularly vulnerable when opponents attack the space behind their defensive line.
Isak’s movement should cause problems for Palace’s centre-backs, especially with Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola capable of creating opportunities around the penalty area.
Liverpool’s recent defeats are a concern, but Palace have been even less convincing. If Iraola’s side rediscover their attacking rhythm, Isak looks the most likely player to turn that superiority into goals.
Liverpool to score in both halves
Palace’s defensive performances have been poor enough to justify considering a more aggressive goals market.
The Eagles conceded five against Brighton, two against Newcastle and another two against Tottenham. More importantly, they have repeatedly struggled to recover once opponents establish control.
Liverpool should have enough possession and attacking quality to create chances throughout Sunday’s encounter. Wirtz’s movement between the lines could be especially troublesome, while Cody Gakpo and Barcola offer different threats from wide areas.
There is also a fitness factor. Palace faced Hoffenheim in the Europa League on Thursday, giving them less recovery time than Liverpool, who played on Wednesday.
Scoring in both halves is a demanding selection, particularly given Liverpool’s occasional finishing problems. However, it offers a more adventurous alternative to a routine over 1.5 goals pick.
Florian Wirtz to score or assist
This is the selection with the biggest element of risk, but there is a reasonable argument behind it.
Wirtz has yet to score in the Premier League this season, despite creating 22 chances and contributing two assists across his opening nine appearances.
His creativity is well established, but Liverpool need more goals from their attacking midfielders rather than relying so heavily on Isak.
Palace’s midfield has struggled to protect the space in front of its defence, particularly when opponents move the ball quickly between the lines. That is precisely the area where Wirtz can be most dangerous.
If Palace focus on containing Isak, Wirtz could find opportunities to arrive around the penalty spot or attack loose balls at the edge of the box.
His lack of league goals makes this a speculative selection rather than a banker. But the added element of either a goal or an assist definitely makes it worthwhile.

Crystal Palace predicted lineup and team news
Predicted formation: 3-4-2-1
Predicted XI: Henderson; Richards, Disasi, Canvot; Mingueza, Wharton, Kamada, Mitchell; McNeil, Pino; Guessand.
Pierre Sage has several attacking problems to solve. Jean-Philippe Mateta is suspended following his red card against Tottenham, while Ismaïla Sarr remains sidelined with a groin injury.
Chadi Riad and Takehiro Tomiyasu are also unavailable. Jørgen Strand Larsen faces a late fitness assessment, leaving Evann Guessand as a potential alternative through the middle.
Daichi Kamada should retain his place after scoring a dramatic late equaliser against Hoffenheim on Thursday. Adam Wharton is expected to partner him in midfield, with Yéremy Pino and Dwight McNeil providing support behind the striker.
Sage may also consider changes following Palace’s European fixture, particularly given the short turnaround before Liverpool’s visit.
Liverpool predicted lineup and team news
Predicted formation: 4-2-3-1
Predicted XI: Alisson; Araujo, Jacquet, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Nyoni, Mac Allister; Gakpo, Wirtz, Barcola; Isak.
Andoni Iraola is expected to restore several regular starters following Wednesday’s Champions League defeat against Fenerbahçe.
Alexander Isak should return to lead the attack after scoring from the bench in Istanbul. Florian Wirtz, Cody Gakpo and Bradley Barcola are also expected to feature.
Liverpool remain without Jeremie Frimpong, Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni and Hugo Ekitike. Ryan Gravenberch is a doubt, while Dominik Szoboszlai is pushing to return to the starting lineup.
Trey Nyoni could retain his midfield place if Gravenberch is unavailable, although Iraola may prefer Szoboszlai alongside Alexis Mac Allister. Virgil van Dijk should captain the side, with Ronald Araujo and Milos Kerkez expected to return at full-back.

Crystal Palace vs Liverpool prediction
Liverpool have hardly been convincing over the last week, but Palace’s defensive performances make this a particularly inviting opportunity to respond.
The Eagles have conceded far too many chances, and the absence of Mateta removes one of their most important attacking outlets.
That could leave Palace struggling to relieve pressure when Liverpool dominate possession.
Iraola’s side have their own problems. Their late collapse against Fenerbahçe was another reminder that Liverpool are still vulnerable defensively, while the midfield has not always provided enough protection.
However, Isak’s movement, Wirtz’s creativity and the pace of Barcola should cause serious problems for Palace’s back three.
The hosts will attempt to make Selhurst Park uncomfortable, but their recent defensive record suggests Liverpool should create enough chances to take control.
A relatively comfortable away victory looks the most likely outcome, although Liverpool’s recent inconsistency means another frustrating afternoon cannot be ruled out.
