Sunday afternoon marks a momentous occasion for Everton as they play their first English Premier League game at their new state-of-the-art Hill Dickinson Stadium against Brighton.

After a frustrating opening weekend for both, there will be pressure on both sides to claim its first three points of the season. 

Everton fell to a controversial 1-0 defeat against Leeds United at Elland Road on Monday night, courtesy of a dubious penalty decision.  

The Toffees were second-best on the night and deserved to lose to a Leeds side who showed no sign of nerves in their first game since promotion. 

Everton produced zero shots in the first half, which, against a newly promoted side, outlines the lack of attacking threat that was on display. 

The arrival of Jack Grealish certainly gave Leeds a lot more to think about, as the Manchester City loanee brought a directness and dynamism that had been missing from David Moyes’ side. However, a lack of ball retention and potency from their front-line meant that Everton were restricted to an xG of 0.80. 

Brighton were held to a 1-1 draw in front of their home faithful against Fulham, as Matt O’Riley’s 55th-minute penalty was cancelled out by a stoppage-time equaliser by Rodrigo Muniz. 

While dropping points late is undoubtedly disheartening, Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler can take a lot of positives from their overall performance, as his side limited Fulham to only one shot on target, in what was a dominant showing on the whole. 

If Brighton are going to succeed at the Hill Dickinson, they will need to improve their consistency at defending set-pieces – something which let them down against Fulham.
