Newcastle have spent the past week discovering that playing Everton twice in five days is an excellent way to make a difficult season considerably worse.

A 3-1 EFL Cup defeat was followed by a 1-0 Premier League loss at St James’ Park on Monday, leaving Matthias Jaissle with three defeats from his last four league matches and an increasingly restless fanbase.

The Magpies head to Craven Cottage on Saturday, 7 November, desperately needing a response. Their early-season promise has faded, and the attacking football that initially made Jaissle’s appointment so intriguing is beginning to expose some familiar problems.

Fulham have hardly been setting the Premier League alight themselves, although Álvaro Arbeloa has at least managed to steady the ship.

The Cottagers have taken seven points from their last three league matches, beating Hull City and Coventry City before drawing 1-1 away to Aston Villa last weekend.

It has not been particularly glamorous. Fulham have scored just three goals across those fixtures, but after a difficult opening to the campaign, Arbeloa will probably accept functional football over entertaining defeats.

Saturday presents an interesting tactical contrast. Fulham prefer to control possession, while Newcastle have looked most dangerous when they can attack quickly into space.

With both managers under pressure to deliver results, our Fulham vs Newcastle prediction examines three betting selections, the latest team news, predicted lineups and the statistics that could decide this Premier League encounter.

What are the best betting tips for Fulham vs Newcastle?

Fulham draw no bet

Fulham’s recent improvement might not be spectacular, but it has been effective. Two consecutive 1-0 league victories against Hull and Coventry were followed by a useful point at Aston Villa.

That seven-point return has given Arbeloa some breathing room, particularly after a difficult start to life at Craven Cottage.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have lost three of their previous four league fixtures. Their only victory in that sequence came away to Crystal Palace, with defeats against Coventry, Aston Villa and Everton raising questions about their defensive organisation.

The Magpies have enough individual quality to make a straight Fulham victory uncomfortable, particularly with Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elanga offering pace in transition.

However, Fulham’s recent defensive improvement and home advantage make them an appealing draw-no-bet selection. It also accounts for the possibility of another tight contest between two sides still searching for consistency.

Under 2.5 total goals

Fulham have become considerably more conservative as the season has progressed.

Their last three Premier League fixtures have produced just four goals in total, with Arbeloa prioritising defensive organisation over taking unnecessary risks.

Newcastle’s recent results tell a similar story in front of goal. They failed to score against Aston Villa and Everton, although they did manage a 2-0 victory at Crystal Palace between those defeats.

Fulham’s preference for patient possession could also reduce the number of opportunities available to both sides. Newcastle are dangerous when games become stretched, but Arbeloa is unlikely to deliberately encourage that kind of contest.

With Fulham struggling to turn possession into goals and Newcastle lacking attacking fluency, under 2.5 goals looks a worthwhile option.

Harvey Barnes to register a shot on target

Barnes has been one of Newcastle’s more productive attacking players despite their inconsistent start.

The winger has contributed two Premier League goals and two assists this season, making him an important source of attacking output in a side that has struggled to find consistency elsewhere.

Fulham’s possession-heavy approach could actually suit Newcastle’s attacking strengths. Jaissle’s side have produced some of their better performances when they have been able to sit deeper and attack the spaces left by opponents.

Barnes is particularly dangerous when cutting inside from the left, and his willingness to shoot makes him an interesting individual selection.

Newcastle do not need to dominate possession for Barnes to find an opportunity. One accurate effort would be enough, making the shot-on-target market more appealing than requiring him to score.

Fulham predicted lineup and team news

Predicted formation: 4-2-3-1

Predicted XI: Leno; Castagne, Affengruber, Bassey, Robinson; Berge, Charles; Bobb, King, Iwobi; García.

Álvaro Arbeloa has the luxury of an almost fully available squad ahead of Newcastle’s visit. Ryan Sessegnon returns from a three-match suspension following his dismissal against Hull City.

However, Antonee Robinson is expected to retain his place at left-back, while Timothy Castagne should continue on the opposite flank. Calvin Bassey and David Affengruber are likely to form the central defensive partnership.

Sander Berge and Shea Charles have provided a solid foundation in midfield, allowing Alex Iwobi, Josh King and Oscar Bobb to operate further forward.

Gonzalo García should lead the attack again. Fulham’s recent improvement has been built on stability, so significant changes to the starting lineup appear unlikely.

Newcastle predicted lineup and team news

Predicted formation: 4-2-3-1

Predicted XI: Horníček; Dedić, Schär, Burn, Hall; Nicolás González, Joelinton; Elanga, Willock, Barnes; Osula.

Matthias Jaissle has several selection problems to manage following Monday’s defeat to Everton.

Jacob Ramsey is suspended after receiving two yellow cards against the Toffees, while Tino Livramento and Ewen Jaouen remain unavailable through injury.

Lewis Miley is also a fitness concern, and Matias Fernandez-Pardo has been struggling with illness. William Osula’s ankle problem creates additional uncertainty in attack, meaning Newcastle may need to reconsider their centre-forward options if he fails a late fitness test.

Amar Dedić should continue at right-back, with Fabian Schär, Dan Burn and Lewis Hall completing the back four.

Anthony Elanga is pushing to retain his starting place, while Harvey Barnes should feature on the opposite flank. Joe Willock and Joelinton could be particularly important in helping Newcastle compete with Fulham’s possession-heavy midfield.

Fulham vs Newcastle prediction

Newcastle have the attacking players to cause Fulham problems, but their recent performances make them difficult to trust away from home.

Jaissle’s approach is ambitious, and there are occasions when Newcastle’s willingness to attack quickly makes them particularly dangerous. However, their defensive vulnerability has become an increasingly significant issue.

Fulham will attempt to exploit that weakness without exposing themselves unnecessarily.

Arbeloa has made his side more difficult to beat, and the recent victories against Hull and Coventry demonstrated that Fulham can manage tight matches without needing to create an enormous number of chances.

The tactical battle could prove decisive. Newcastle may be comfortable allowing Fulham possession, particularly if it creates opportunities for Barnes and Elanga to counterattack.

However, the hosts have been much better at controlling matches recently, and Newcastle’s inability to turn promising spells into goals remains a concern.

We expect a relatively cautious encounter, with Fulham’s defensive organisation and home advantage helping them secure another narrow victory.

Final score prediction: Fulham 1-0 Newcastle United
