Manchester City and Brighton must be getting sick of the sight of each other.
Just three days after their Carabao Cup meeting at the Etihad, the two sides return to the same ground for a Premier League encounter that could have a significant impact on the title race.
Wednesday’s cup tie ended 2-2 before City progressed on penalties. Brighton pushed Enzo Maresca’s side all the way, but ultimately left Manchester empty-handed.
Now, Fabian Hürzeler has an immediate opportunity for revenge.
City remain top of the Premier League after winning seven of their opening eight matches. However, their perfect start came to an abrupt end last weekend when Nicolas Jackson scored twice in Aston Villa’s 2-1 victory over the champions.
Brighton have been one of the season’s biggest success stories. The Seagulls sit third with 16 points and have scored a league-high 23 goals in eight matches.
Their recent results have been less convincing, though. A 2-0 defeat at Liverpool followed a goalless European draw against Jablonec, before Wednesday’s cup elimination made it three matches without a victory.
There is also an intriguing historical record to consider. City haven’t lost a home Premier League match against Brighton, yet they’re winless in the last four league meetings between the clubs.
With Erling Haaland looking to add to his nine league goals and Brighton possessing one of the division’s most dangerous attacks, another entertaining afternoon could be on the cards.
The first meeting required penalties to separate them. Saturday’s rematch promises to be every bit as competitive.

Manchester City to win
City’s perfect league record ended at Aston Villa last weekend, but seven victories from eight matches remains an impressive start under Enzo Maresca.
The defending champions have won all four of their Premier League home matches this season and remain unbeaten in nine home league meetings with Brighton.
Wednesday’s cup encounter was much closer, with City needing penalties to progress after a 2-2 draw. However, several regular starters were rested, including Erling Haaland.
Brighton have enough attacking quality to cause problems, but their recent performances have dipped. With City expected to restore their strongest lineup, I fancy the hosts to edge another competitive encounter.
Both teams to score
Brighton have scored 23 goals in eight Premier League matches, more than any other side in the division.
Hürzeler’s team have demonstrated their attacking potential throughout the campaign, including a 5-0 victory over Crystal Palace. However, their recent goalless outings against Liverpool and Jablonec are a concern.
City have scored in 24 consecutive Premier League matches and possess the league’s leading scorer in Haaland. Their defensive record is less convincing, though, with nine goals conceded in eight fixtures.
The last two league meetings between these sides at the Etihad finished 2-2 and 1-1. Given the attacking quality available to both managers, I expect another match featuring goals at both ends.
Erling Haaland anytime goalscorer
Haaland has scored nine Premier League goals this season, continuing his remarkable consistency in front of goal.
The Norwegian was rested for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup meeting, leaving him fresh for Saturday’s rematch. His return should give City a considerably greater threat inside Brighton’s penalty area.
Brighton’s high defensive line can leave space behind, particularly when their aggressive pressing is beaten. With Rayan Cherki and Jérémy Doku capable of creating opportunities, Haaland should receive chances.
Brighton have generally defended well this season, but keeping Haaland quiet for 90 minutes is another challenge entirely. If he starts, I fancy the striker to add to his league tally.

Enzo Maresca is expected to restore several first-team regulars after making changes for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup victory over Brighton. Erling Haaland, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Rúben Dias should return to the starting lineup.
Antoine Semenyo remains unavailable with a knee injury, while Matheus Nunes faces a fitness assessment after missing the midweek encounter.
Phil Foden is pushing for another start after impressing against Brighton in the cup, while Rayan Cherki and Jérémy Doku are expected to provide creativity behind Haaland.
Brighton predicted lineup and team news
Formation: 4-2-3-1
Predicted XI: Verbruggen; Wieffer, Vušković, Dunk, Boscagli; Ayari, Groß; Gómez, Hinshelwood, De Cuyper; Kostoulas.
Fabian Hürzeler has several injury concerns ahead of Brighton’s second trip to the Etihad in four days.
Kaoru Mitoma, Evan Ferguson and Stefanos Tzimas remain sidelined, while Ferdi Kadıoğlu and Chema Andrés are doubts after suffering injuries against Liverpool. Femi Azeez is also unavailable.
Mats Wieffer returned to contention for Wednesday’s cup tie, while Yankuba Minteh made his comeback from injury. Both could feature as Hürzeler considers changes following a demanding week.
Charalampos Kostoulas is expected to lead the attack, with Diego Gómez, Jack Hinshelwood and Maxim De Cuyper competing for attacking roles.

Manchester City vs Brighton prediction
Wednesday’s Carabao Cup encounter demonstrated how little separates these sides when Brighton are at their best.
Hürzeler’s team have enjoyed an excellent start to the season, and their attacking record suggests they’re capable of troubling even the strongest opponents.
However, Brighton’s recent results have been less impressive.
Defeat at Liverpool, a goalless European draw and Wednesday’s cup elimination have interrupted their momentum at an awkward time.
City also have something to prove after suffering their first league defeat of the campaign against Aston Villa.
Maresca will expect a response, particularly with Arsenal applying pressure near the top of the table.
The return of Haaland should make a significant difference. City created opportunities without their leading scorer on Wednesday, and his presence could turn another tight contest in their favour.
I expect Brighton to cause problems, especially if they can exploit the spaces left by City’s attacking full-backs.
But the hosts have been excellent at the Etihad this season, and their additional attacking quality should ultimately prove decisive.
Score prediction: Manchester City 2-1 Brighton
