Manchester United against Roma has produced some memorable European nights, although one in particular still gives the Italians nightmares.
The 7-1 demolition at Old Trafford in April 2007 remains one of United’s most famous Champions League performances. Nearly 20 years later, Roma return to Manchester hoping to avoid another painful evening.
This time, however, United have rather more immediate concerns than recreating a historic scoreline.
Tuesday’s Champions League encounter offers the Red Devils an opportunity to strengthen their position in the league phase, but their domestic performances have raised questions about their consistency.
Roma, meanwhile, arrive with ambitions of their own. The Italian side have the tactical discipline and European experience to make life uncomfortable for United, particularly if the hosts struggle to turn possession into meaningful chances.
The contrast in approaches should make for an intriguing contest. United will be expected to take the initiative in front of their supporters, while Roma could be content to defend compactly and exploit counterattacks.
Old Trafford has witnessed plenty of European drama between these clubs. Another competitive encounter looks likely on Tuesday, even if a repeat of 2007 would be a considerable surprise.
The latest form makes Roma a much more attractive betting proposition than United. I’ve gone with three selections that reflect the visitors’ attacking strength without simply repeating the same match-result angle.

Roma to win
Manchester United’s season is rapidly becoming a test of how much punishment Michael Carrick can absorb before the club decides something has to change.
The Red Devils have gone nine matches without a victory, losing six of those encounters. Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Chelsea followed a 3-0 home loss against Bournemouth and a humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como.
Roma are heading in the opposite direction. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side are unbeaten in Serie A this season and have won four of their last five matches across all competitions, scoring freely along the way.
The Italians have struggled historically on English soil, but United’s current problems are difficult to overlook. With Donyell Malen in excellent form and Roma playing with considerably more confidence, an away victory looks worth backing.
Over 2.5 goals
Roma’s recent performances suggest Tuesday’s encounter could produce plenty of goals.
Gasperini’s side have scored 21 times across their last six matches, including five against Udinese on Saturday. Their previous Champions League outings also produced a 4-3 defeat against Real Madrid and a 4-0 victory over Slovan Bratislava.
However, Roma are far from watertight defensively. They conceded twice against Udinese, twice against Cagliari and three times against Napoli, offering United encouragement despite their attacking struggles.
The hosts have conceded seven goals across their last three matches, while Roma’s aggressive approach should create opportunities at both ends. With the visitors likely to dictate the attacking tempo, over 2.5 goals appeals.
Donyell Malen anytime goalscorer
Donyell Malen has emerged as Roma’s biggest attacking threat, and United’s struggling defence faces a difficult evening attempting to contain him.
The Dutch international has scored eight goals in 10 Serie A appearances this season and added three in the Champions League. He also has two European assists, giving him five direct goal involvements in just three league-phase matches.
Malen’s movement is particularly dangerous when Roma win possession high up the pitch. He regularly attacks the space behind defenders, while Matías Soulé and Bryan Cristante can provide the service needed to exploit United’s defensive weaknesses.
With Benjamin Šeško unavailable and United struggling for attacking consistency, Roma may enjoy extended spells of pressure. Malen is the most obvious candidate to capitalise, making him my preferred goalscorer selection.

Manchester United predicted lineup and team news
Formation: 4-2-3-1
Predicted XI: Lammens; Dalot, Maguire, Martínez, Mazraoui; Mainoo, Andrey Santos; Bruno Fernandes, Tielemans, Mount; Mbeumo.
Michael Carrick faces several selection concerns following Saturday’s defeat at Chelsea. Benjamin Šeško remains sidelined with a significant injury, while Patrick Dorgu and Luke Shaw are also unavailable.
Lisandro Martínez was sent off at Stamford Bridge but is eligible to feature in Europe. The Argentine could return alongside Harry Maguire, with Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui occupying the full-back positions.
Kobbie Mainoo has returned to training and could start alongside Andrey Santos. Amad Diallo and Marcus Rashford face fitness assessments, leaving Bryan Mbeumo in contention to lead the attack, supported by Bruno Fernandes, Youri Tielemans and Mason Mount.
Roma predicted lineup and team news
Formation: 3-4-2-1
Predicted XI: Gollini; N’Dicka, Mancini, Ghilardi; Molina, De Roon, Pisilli, Wesley; Cristante, Soulé; Malen.
Gian Piero Gasperini is expected to retain the attacking structure that has produced so many goals in recent weeks, although injuries continue to limit his options.
Paulo Dybala and Lorenzo Pellegrini remain unavailable, while Manu Koné and first-choice goalkeeper Mile Svilar are also sidelined. Muhammed Bah is another absentee.
Pierluigi Gollini should continue in goal, with Gianluca Mancini organising the defence. Matías Soulé is expected to operate behind Donyell Malen, who will lead the attack after an outstanding start to the campaign.

Manchester United vs Roma prediction
United desperately need a result, but there is little evidence to suggest their fortunes are about to change.
Carrick’s side have struggled to create clear opportunities, defensive mistakes continue to prove costly, and the pressure surrounding the club is growing with every defeat.
Roma arrive with almost the opposite set of circumstances.
Gasperini’s team are playing with confidence, scoring freely and enjoying an unbeaten start to their domestic campaign. Their recent victories have demonstrated the variety of attacking threats available to the Italian manager.
The visitors’ defensive record does offer United some encouragement. Roma have conceded regularly in recent weeks, and Bruno Fernandes possesses the quality to create chances even when the team around him is struggling.
However, United’s inability to control matches and protect their defence could prove particularly costly against Malen and Soulé.
Roma’s poor historical record in England is a concern, but this United side look vulnerable enough for the Italians to finally put that record behind them.
I expect the hosts to find the net, but Roma’s greater confidence and attacking quality should ultimately prove decisive.
Score prediction: Manchester United 1-3 Roma
