Sunderland spent years fighting to get back into the Premier League. Nine matches into their second season back, they’re already discovering just how quickly the top flight can turn nasty.
Bottom of the table, one league victory all season and a manager openly discussing a relegation battle. The Stadium of Light hasn’t had much to celebrate lately, and Sunday’s visitors aren’t exactly arriving to offer a helping hand.
Régis Le Bris watched his side lose 3-1 at Coventry last weekend, a result that left the Black Cats rooted to the bottom of the Premier League. Enzo Le Fée’s penalty offered brief hope, but Sunderland had already conceded three times before finding the net.
Thursday brought another setback. Dinamo Zagreb left Wearside with a 2-0 Europa League victory, extending Sunderland’s miserable run and leaving Le Bris with very little time to prepare for Chelsea.
The contrast with last season is painful. Sunderland built their success on defensive resilience, organisation and a willingness to scrap for every point. Those qualities have been much harder to find this time around.
Chelsea arrive with problems of their own, although Xabi Alonso’s concerns are rather different.
The Blues sit fourth in the Premier League and responded to their defeat against Tottenham with a 1-1 draw at Liverpool before beating Manchester United 2-0 last weekend.
Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers scored against United, while young goalkeeper Mike Penders kept a clean sheet in the absence of Emiliano Martínez.
Chelsea are far from flawless, particularly with several important players injured, but their attacking options should trouble a Sunderland defence missing two of its most important centre-backs.
For the hosts, the immediate objective is simple: stop the losing run and give the Stadium of Light something to get behind.

What are the best betting tips for Sunderland vs Chelsea?
Chelsea to win and over 2.5 total goals
Sunderland’s defensive situation makes this a particularly difficult fixture for Le Bris.
Dan Ballard remains sidelined with a hamstring injury, while Omar Alderete is suspended following his red card against Coventry. Losing both established centre-backs against Chelsea’s attacking midfielders is far from ideal.
The Black Cats have lost four consecutive Premier League matches, and their latest defeat exposed familiar problems. Coventry repeatedly found space in dangerous areas, with Sunderland struggling to protect their penalty area.
Chelsea, meanwhile, have scored 19 goals in nine league matches. Their 2-0 victory over Manchester United demonstrated that Alonso’s side can still create opportunities without injured leading scorer João Pedro.
The visitors should have enough attacking quality to win, and combining an away victory with at least three match goals offers a more worthwhile angle than Chelsea’s match-result price alone.
Sunderland under 1.5 team goals
Sunderland’s attacking numbers are becoming increasingly difficult to defend.
Le Bris’ side have scored just seven goals in their opening nine Premier League matches, with Brian Brobbey responsible for three of them. They have failed to score in several important fixtures, including their most recent European outing.
The problem isn’t simply a lack of effort. Sunderland have struggled to move the ball into dangerous positions consistently, leaving Brobbey isolated against opposition centre-backs.
Chelsea have defensive absences, but their midfield should give them a considerable advantage in possession. Moisés Caicedo and Roméo Lavia can disrupt Sunderland’s attempts to build attacks, while Alonso’s side should spend plenty of time in the opposition half.
A Sunderland goal remains possible, particularly through a set piece or a moment of quality from Le Fée. However, asking the Premier League’s bottom club to score twice against a top-four opponent looks ambitious.
Morgan Rogers to score or assist
Chelsea’s injury problems have increased the importance of Morgan Rogers, and the England international is responding.
Rogers scored against Manchester United last weekend, taking his Premier League tally to five goals. With João Pedro unavailable, he is one of Chelsea’s most reliable attacking outlets.
His movement between the lines could be particularly important against Sunderland’s makeshift central defence. Rogers is comfortable receiving possession in crowded areas before driving towards goal or combining with Palmer.
Sunderland’s midfield will have to remain compact to protect the back four, but doing so risks allowing Chelsea’s attacking players more freedom around the edge of the penalty area.
Rather than relying solely on another Rogers goal, the score-or-assist market also covers his ability to create opportunities for Palmer, Estêvão and Pedro Neto.

Sunderland predicted lineup and team news
Predicted formation: 4-2-3-1
Predicted XI: Roefs; Hume, O’Nien, Danso, Reinildo; Sadiki, Xhaka; Rigg, Le Fée, Angulo; Brobbey.
Régis Le Bris faces a major defensive selection headache. Dan Ballard remains unavailable with a hamstring injury, while Omar Alderete is suspended after his dismissal against Coventry.
Nordi Mukiele is also a fitness concern. Le Bris must decide how much to rotate after a demanding European fixture.
Habib Diarra and Romaine Mundle remain sidelined. Granit Xhaka and Noah Sadiki should anchor the midfield, with Enzo Le Fée operating further forward.
Brian Brobbey is expected to lead the attack. The Dutch striker has scored three of Sunderland’s seven Premier League goals, making him an important outlet against Chelsea’s defence.
Chelsea predicted lineup and team news
Predicted formation: 4-2-3-1
Predicted XI: Penders; Acheampong, Fofana, Colwill, Palestra; Caicedo, Lavia; Estêvão, Palmer, Rogers; Neto.
Xabi Alonso has several important absentees ahead of Sunday’s trip to Wearside. João Pedro remains sidelined with a muscular injury, while Reece James, Maxence Lacroix and Jamie Gittens are also unavailable.
Emiliano Martínez has returned to training following a fractured jaw, but Alonso must decide whether to recall him immediately. Mike Penders impressed against Manchester United and could retain his place.
Jordan Henderson is back in contention after illness, while Moisés Caicedo’s fitness requires monitoring. Roméo Lavia could keep his starting place after an encouraging performance against United.
Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers should provide Chelsea’s main creative threat, with Estêvão also pushing to start after impressing last weekend. Pedro Neto is an option to lead the attack in João Pedro’s absence.

Sunderland vs Chelsea prediction
There is little about Sunderland’s recent performances to suggest Sunday’s meeting with Chelsea will provide the turnaround their supporters desperately need.
The Black Cats have struggled at both ends of the pitch, and the absence of Ballard and Alderete leaves them particularly vulnerable against Chelsea’s attacking movement.
Thursday’s European defeat is another concern. Sunderland have had less recovery time than their visitors, and confidence appears fragile after a succession of disappointing results.
Chelsea are not without weaknesses. Alonso’s side have been inconsistent, and injuries have deprived them of several important players.
However, Palmer, Rogers and Estêvão should have enough quality to exploit Sunderland’s defensive problems. The visitors also possess a considerable midfield advantage, particularly if Caicedo and Lavia are both available.
Sunderland should produce a response in front of their own supporters. Brobbey’s physical presence could cause problems, while Le Fée has the technical ability to create opportunities.
But Chelsea’s attacking quality and Sunderland’s defensive absences make an away victory the most convincing outcome.
