This Sunday’s slate of Premier League games sees struggling Spurs travel to the Stadium of Light to take on Sunderland in new manager Roberto De Zerbi’s first game in charge.

One of these teams is deeply embroiled in a relegation fight, whilst the other is hoping to make a late run for European football next season.

The twist? You probably thought these two would have been the other way around at the start of the season.

On one side, you’ve got Sunderland. Newly promoted, supposed to be scrapping for survival, just happy to be here…except they didn’t read that script.

Instead, they’ve spent the season pressing teams into mistakes, stealing points late, and generally behaving like a team that’s been in the Premier League for years and sit just three points from a European football spot.

On the other side, you’ve got Tottenham. Bigger budget, bigger expectations, bigger names…and somehow sitting uncomfortably close to the relegation zone while trying to learn a new system on the fly.

It’s part rebuild, part identity crisis, part “we’ll figure it out eventually,” which is not ideal in April.

Sunderland have got a host of their star players returning from injury off the back of the extended international break.

Spurs come into this one sitting just one point outside the relegation zone, with Roberto De Zerbi hoping to turn things around.

What are the best bets for Sunderland vs Tottenham?

Sunderland to win

Sunderland have been unable to field their strongest line-up since December, with AFCON absentees and injuries, but they still somehow kept things ticking over when many said they would struggle.

Regis Le Bris himself probably never thought his side would stand a chance at obtaining European football. But with seven games to go, they do.

With players such as Nordi Mukiele, Reinildo and possibly goalkeeper Robin Roefs set to return this weekend, it is a huge boost in their fight.

Spurs, on the other hand, find themselves with yet another new manager tasked with trying to steady what is a sinking ship.

Beaten 3-0 by fellow relegation scrappers Nottingham Forest in their last game, things aren’t looking very good for the North London outfit.

I just haven’t seen enough character from this Spurs squad to indicate they have anything about them to fight hard enough to win these types of games.

That’s the complete opposite of Sunderland, who are full of fight and character – and that’s why I’ve backed them to win here.

Brian Brobbey anytime goalscorer

Brian Brobbey has been nothing short of exceptional for Sunderland. He has scored some vitally important goals, none more so than his derby winner at St James’ Park last time out, securing all three points for Sunderland against bitter rivals Newcastle.

But it was the manner of his performance that had critics raving about him after the game, where he bullied Dan Burn and Sven Botman all game long.

But this isn’t new information to Sunderland fans. We have seen him do this all season against centre-halves such as Gabriel.

He is currently Sunderland’s top scorer with six goals, granted it’s nothing to write home about, but anything positive in the final third always seems to come through him.

I’ve backed him to score here against a cagey at best Spurs defence that is no stranger to leaking goals.
