Etihad Airways has hit back at the Premier League over the way Manchester City’s financial verdict was communicated, accusing the league of creating “damaging implications” for the airline despite it not being named in the published findings.
An independent commission found Man City guilty of serious breaches of Premier League financial rules, including arranging “sham” commercial contracts as part of a disguised funding scheme which artificially inflated the club’s revenues by £830m.
Etihad Airways, which has been Man City’s principal sponsor since 2009, has categorically denied any involvement in improper commercial arrangements and expressed particular frustration that the Premier League did not contact the airline during the investigation.
‘Lack of clarity and transparency’
“At no time did the Premier League reach out to or engage with Etihad in the process associated with the commission’s opinion,” the airline said.
“Etihad is deeply concerned by the way this matter has been communicated publicly.
“The lack of clarity and transparency, together with the selective disclosure of information, has created damaging implications for Etihad despite the airline not being named in the published decision.”
The airline also criticised what it described as a period of “selective leaks and reporting”, arguing that the Premier League should take responsibility for the consequences of how the findings were presented.

No opportunity given
Etihad said it had not been given the opportunity to provide relevant information or challenge material that could now be interpreted as reflecting adversely on the company.
The airline is now seeking legal advice on its options and potential recourse to protect its interests, while the Premier League has declined to comment on Etihad’s statement.
Despite its criticism of the league, Etihad reaffirmed its support for Man City and its longstanding relationship with the club.
“Etihad is immensely proud of its longstanding relationship with Manchester City,” the statement added.
“Our commitment to Manchester City, its supporters and our shared partnership remains strong.”
