Manchester City have confirmed Rodri underwent successful back surgery on Monday, while Joško Gvardiol has signed a new five-year contract at the Etihad.
The Spain international – who is reportedly on La Liga giants Real Madrid’s wishlist this summer – had been troubled by a recurring minor back issue over the past year.
Gvardiol, meanwhile, has blossomed into one of Europe’s top central defenders following his arrival from RB Leipzig in 2023 and is set to be a Man City player until the summer of 2031.
Rodri undergoes successful surgery
World Cup 2026–winning midfield general Rodri suffered a slew of injuries after landing the 2024 Ballon d’Or, but the 30-year-old will now hope to finally be on the mend.
A club statement said: “Manchester City can confirm Rodri has undergone successful minor back surgery.
“The midfielder had been feeling discomfort for some time but has now undergone a procedure to address the issue and will now begin a short period of rehabilitation.
“Everyone at the club wishes him a speedy recovery.”

“The City fans have been unbelievable with me from day one – and the club provide absolutely everything for players.
“It’s the best club in the world to be at. I have felt so much love and respect during my three years here and I don’t take that for granted.

Viana praises ‘exceptional’ Croatian
Man City director of football Hugo Viana added on the Croatian: “Joško is a player this Club really believes in.
“He is young, an outstanding professional and already one of the best defenders in the world.
“Manchester City are committed to keeping our best talent, which is why we are so happy this new contract has been agreed.
“Joško epitomises what we want in our defenders – he can play multiple positions, is quick, strong and when he attacks he does it superbly. He is exceptional.
“But the way he conducts himself is also very impressive. This is a young man determined to be the best he can be – an approach that is totally aligned with our overall vision.
“I want to congratulate Joško on this new deal and everyone at City is now focused on ensuring he maximises his potential.”
