Premier League: Michael Carrick on the brink after Bournemouth thrash Man Utd at Old Trafford

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick faces an uncertain future after Bournemouth thrashed the Red Devils 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson scored for the Cherries as United once again failed to deliver, with club captain Bruno Fernandes benched throughout following his recent public criticism of the managerial staff.

The loss came on the back of a 4-1 midweek defeat to Como in the Champions League and extended United’s winless run to eight games, leaving them 16th in the Premier League table.

Carrick admits ‘tough situation’

After yet another abject performance from the Manchester club, Carrick told Sky Sports: “It was a strange mix of emotions at the end of the game.

“It wasn’t a nice way to end the game. It was a tough day for the players. We went into the game having been rocked. You can feel that.

“They’re really hurting and disappointed in there. It’s not a nice feeling. You have to accept it – we’re in that situation. It’s a tough situation.”

On the speculation surrounding his future, Carrick added: “What is next? I don’t know.

“I’ll always do what’s best for this football club. I don’t change that now.

“I love what I do, I love the responsibility. But we’ll have to wait and see.”

Rose sympathises with colleague

Bournemouth boss Marco Rose, meanwhile, said: “We wanted to be front-footed. We wanted to be brave and we played brave.

“We have good players and we showed it – we were just Bournemouth.”

Asked about the Carrick situation, Rose stated: “I feel a lot of empathy for my colleagues, for everyone.

“People must understand that we are just humans trying to do our job in the best possible way.

“When the game starts, it is about the lads, sometimes about momentum, a bit of luck. It is never easy.

“I feel empathy for Michael.”
