Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday as Michael Carrick’s side continued their search for a second Premier League win of the season.
Bryan Mbeumo gave United the lead in the 35th minute, finishing from close range after a cross from Youri Tielemans.
However, Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised for Leeds shortly after half-time, leaving the visitors with another disappointing result.
Man United came into the game following a difficult week, which included a defeat to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League and Lisandro Martínez’s controversial interview.
Carrick made tactical adjustments to his side and there were admittedly signs of improvement, although the Red Devils were unable to hold on to their lead.
Carrick praises commitment after draw
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Carrick praised his players’ commitment and determination despite the result.
“There was definitely commitment. It had to be there. I didn’t doubt that,” he said.
“I was looking forward to the game to see that – there was definitely an edge and intensity to it.
“I spoke to the boys about the history of this game, what it means to the supporters, to the football club. It definitely tests you.
“It wasn’t a perfect performance, but there was a lot in there to show determination to get a result.
“We’re not getting too carried away because we didn’t win the game. It felt like a bit of a fresh start in terms of where we’re at.
“The boys are desperate to do well for each other and the club.”
Carrick also explained his decision to change the formation, suggesting the adjustments gave his side a different look.
“There was a freshness. We had a different spine. That’s a massive positive for us,” he added.
“A little tweak tactically, not a huge change. We had to adapt to what their strengths are.”
Despite the improved performance, United remain under pressure, having recorded just one Premier League victory in their opening seven matches.
Carrick will need his side to turn these performances into wins if they are to climb the table.
