Manchester United’s January transfer window looks set to be one of the most intriguing in recent years as questions over Kobbie Mainoo’s future at Old Trafford continue to grow, and Roy Keane has voiced his frustrations over the situation.
The 20-year-old midfielder has found first-team opportunities hard to come by this season under manager Ruben Amorim. His situation has sparked increasing talk of a potential January move away from the club.
Mainoo has not started in the Premier League so far this campaign. His appearances have been limited, mostly to substitute roles – a situation that has led to frustration on and off the pitch.
A move to Italy?
Reports suggest Mainoo is considering a loan move to get regular game time, a decision he feels could help him retain his place in the England setup ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

According to the Telegraph, Manchester United, have made it clear they are reluctant to sell the England international outright in January.
The club will only consider letting Mainoo depart if an “exceptional offer” arrives, according to Sky Sports.
Reports add that United are not planning to accept permanent bids. They are more open to loaning Mainoo out, ideally to a club outside the Premier League.
Napoli are among those reportedly interested in taking him on loan for the remainder of the season.

During United’s dramatic 4-4 draw with Bournemouth, Mainoo’s brother sparked headlines. He wore a “Free Kobbie Mainoo” T-shirt inside Old Trafford, highlighting fan frustration over the midfielder’s lack of game time.
Former United captain Roy Keane weighed in on the Mainoo drama: “Are you telling me that he can’t sit there for another six months?
“He might think the manager’s on his way out in the summer. He’s 20 years of age. What’s wrong with sitting and learning your trade? And even if he’s not getting a chance, we’ve all had to do it.
“Sometimes a manager is on your case and what you have to do is prove them wrong. Jamie [Carragher] made a point that he never felt like a regular at Liverpool, I never felt like that at United.
“Every day is your chance to prove yourself to the manager and when the manager is picking his team, [he goes] ‘He has to play’. He’s got to get that in his mindset.
“And when he’s got his idiot of a brother doing all that… we shouldn’t even be giving that kind of stuff the time of day. Sometimes you’re just surrounded by idiots, especially the families.”
United will closely monitor their midfield situation ahead of January. With competition for places intense, Mainoo’s path remains unclear.
Whether he stays to fight for his spot or moves temporarily to rediscover form, the January window could prove pivotal in shaping the midfielder’s career.
