Manchester United defender Harry Maguire is attracting interest from several clubs in Italy’s top flight as the January transfer window heats up.
With less than six months left on his contract at Old Trafford, the England centre-back’s future is once again in the spotlight.
Italy’s calling
According to reports, Inter Milan, Napoli and Fiorentina are among the Serie A sides that are considering making a move for Harry Maguire.
The interest comes at a time when Maguire is not a regular starter under the current United regime, while his contract runs down.
Inter Milan are said to be the most likely of the trio to make a formal offer. However, that could depend on how their own defensive situation evolves this month.
Inter may look to bring in an experienced centre-back if long-serving defenders such as Stefan de Vrij or Francesco Acerbi move on.
Napoli are also monitoring Maguire’s situation as they weigh up strengthening their back line with a seasoned player.
Fiorentina, undergoing a sporting overhaul under new leadership, are also interested. But their position near the bottom of the Serie A table could make a deal more complicated.
Experience and leadership
Maguire, 32, has a long history with Manchester United. He joined the club in 2019 for a then-world-record fee for a defender.
He has since become a familiar presence at Old Trafford, both as a starter and a captain.
His current deal is set to expire in June. And while the club have previously extended his terms, a longer-term commitment has not yet been finalised.
This season, Maguire has started only a handful of English Premier League games.
A mix of competition for places and injury setbacks has limited his involvement. Despite this, his experience and leadership qualities remain valued both at United and by potential suitors abroad.
Should United decide to cash in this month rather than risk losing him for free in the summer, there may be movement in the coming weeks.
Whether any of the interested clubs make a formal offer before the window closes remains to be seen.
