Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim smiling at a press conference

Solskjær a short-term option as Man United identify Ruben Amorim successor

Manchester United have identified their preferred managerial target after parting ways with Ruben Amorim yesterday, with Ole Gunnar Solskjær reportedly likely to fill the role until the end of the season.

The move comes after a heated press conference following a 1-1 draw against in-form Leeds, where the Portuguese manager expressed his frustration with a difference in opinion from the board.

Amorim’s 14 months and 63 games in charge yielded just a 31.9% win rate, the worst record of any permanent United boss. Only Spurs, West Ham, and Wolves have picked up fewer points in the league since his arrival.

He oversaw the club’s worst-ever Premier League finish of 15th in a season that was almost saved by a Europa League final appearance, before they ultimately lost to Tottenham.

Amorim’s departure means the Red Devils’ next suitor will be the 11th in a turbulent post-Ferguson era.

Candidates to replace Amorim at Man United

As one of the hottest managerial properties in the English Premier League, it is no surprise that Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner is atop the list for Amorim’s replacement.

The club is looking to dip back into the pool they entered just over a year ago and re-scout some potential names, including Ipswich’s Kieran McKenna and the recently jobless Enzo Maresca.

Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann’s name has also been thrown into the mix, with the former Leipzig and Bayern man touted for a return to club football after this year’s World Cup.

Surprising reports emerged on Wednesday night linking Solskjær with a short-term return to Old Trafford.

Oliver Glasner’s success with Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace have enjoyed one of the most fruitful spells in the club’s history under Oliver Glasner, picking up a first major trophy with a 1-0 win over Manchester City in last year’s FA Cup Final.

They followed that up with another soon after, with a win on penalties against Liverpool in the Community Shield.

Their FA Cup triumph saw them qualify for Europe for the first time, with a Europa Conference League venture underway this season.

He has proven that he can turn around a struggling team and deliver trophies and results, both of which United have been lacking.

With tensions rising between Glasner and Palace ownership after he publicly outed them for not spending enough money, it seems like the perfect time for United to swoop.

The Austrian’s contract expires at the end of the season, leaving no compensation required to complete the deal.

Reports around the club feel that they are willing to wait until the summer to appoint a new long-term manager, with former player Darren Fletcher currently overseeing the squad on a caretaker basis.
