Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk has come out in fierce defense of himself after claims he sabotaged his side’s 2026 World Cup run after allegedly playing a role in tactical changes that led to their early demise from the tournament.
The tactical shift in question is then Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman choosing to shift to a back five against Morocco, which saw his side eliminated on penalties and from the World Cup in the Round of 32.
This controversy arose in a press conference prior to Netherlands’ Nations League clash with Germany, in which Van Dijk had a verbal confrontation with a Dutch reporter over the allegations.
‘Utter nonsense’
“One of your colleagues also said, of course, that it was my idea to switch to playing with a back five. That is utter nonsense,” Van Dijk told one reporter.
“The fact is we simply failed at the World Cup. Those are the hard facts. We didn’t play a good World Cup.
“It’s not about me. You perform together. You’re a team. Your claim that I destroyed Dutch football after the World Cup – that sort of thing is completely baseless.”

Players don’t have a say
Netherlands’ back-five formation worked for the most part, with Morocco only equalising in stoppage time through an Issa Diop goal.
“The plan is devised by the staff. Nonsense is being spread so that I look even worse. That happens far too often,” Van Dijk added.
“I was told that it was my fault we played with five, that Ronald Koeman and I have destroyed Dutch football.
“The plan worked for 89 minutes, even though it was a bad match. We almost broke through. The idea that I destroyed Dutch football makes absolutely no sense. I didn’t decide that.”
Barcelona and Spain legend Xavi Hernandez now leads the Netherlands national team, in the hopes of redeeming a disappointing World Cup run with a positive showing in the Nations League and Euro 2028 qualifiers next year.
