Iran vs New Zealand prediction
I think Iran are being slightly underestimated going into this tournament.
A lot of people look at New Zealand’s unbeaten runs and defensive record, but I’m not convinced they’ve faced enough opponents of a decent level for those numbers to carry much weight here.
That’s not a criticism of New Zealand. They’ve done exactly what was required of them during qualification. The issue is that World Cup football is a different challenge altogether.
Iran have players who are used to competing in stronger leagues and higher-pressure matches. Mehdi Taremi, in particular, is the sort of striker who doesn’t need many chances to make an impact.
I also think this matchup suits Iran. New Zealand are likely to sit deep and make the game compact, but Iran are usually patient in these situations. They won’t mind having most of the ball and waiting for openings.
The longer New Zealand keep the score level, the more belief they’ll gain. However, I’m struggling to see where their goals come from if Iran score first.
Chris Wood is always a threat, especially from crosses and set pieces, but I don’t expect New Zealand to create enough opportunities to trouble Iran consistently.
For me, this feels like a game where Iran do not need to be brilliant. They just need to be efficient.
