England manager Thomas Tuchel on the Wembley touchline

Thomas Tuchel extends England contract through to Euro 2028

Thomas Tuchel has extended his contract as England head coach through to Euro 2028.

The Football Association said the decision brings “clarity and full focus” ahead of the next major tournaments.

The FA make an early move amidst chaos

The extension confirms Tuchel’s longer-term future with the national team and is designed to remove uncertainty around his position, particularly with several major clubs expected to review their managerial situations in the coming months.

Manchester United and other Premier League sides have been linked with possible coaching changes this summer, but the FA has moved early to secure Tuchel’s services and avoid speculation becoming a distraction.

In a statement, the FA said the renewed deal allows England to plan with stability and concentrate fully on World Cup preparation and the European Championship that follows in 2028.

Tuchel’s core backroom staff have also committed their futures. Anthony Barry, Henrique Hilario, Nico Mayer and James Melbourne have all agreed extensions that will keep them in place through to the end of Euro 2028.

‘Dream job’: Thomas Tuchel on England contract extension

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham played a key role in the agreement, with Tuchel highlighting the support he has received from the leadership group and staff inside the organisation.

“I have had so much support from [FA chief executive] Mark [Bullingham], all my colleagues at the FA and from fans wherever I go that I did not hesitate when asked to continue in this dream job,” the former Chelsea head coach said.

He also pointed to the significance of the next European Championship, describing it as a major motivation behind his decision to extend.

“Euro 2028 will be a very special tournament and as a coach there is nothing more you want than to compete with the very best on the biggest possible stage,” he said.

By confirming Tuchel’s contract well in advance, the FA reduces the risk of ongoing questions about his future dominating media coverage during qualification and tournament build-up periods.

With the futures of Tuchel and his staff secured, attention turns fully to results on the pitch and building a squad capable of challenging for silverware come the 2026 World Cup.
