Group A is being widely tipped as the most open and unpredictable group of the 2026 World Cup despite featuring the host nation. There’s no doubt that they’ll be the clear favourites, but they’ll face a stiff test from a trio of dark horses looking to shine on the world’s biggest stage.
Who is in World Cup Group A?
While Javier Aguirre’s side do not have a straightforward group, they do have the clearest route. They face South Africa in the tournament opener at the Azteca before meeting South Korea in Guadalajara and Czechia back in Mexico City.
That home advantage matters. Mexico should bring defensive structure, tournament experience, and enough physical edge to handle a group that lacks one elite side.
The main concern comes in attack. Raul Jimenez still looks to be their most reliable route to goals, while Julian Quinones, Roberto Alvarado, and Alexis Vega give Aguirre options around him. But Mexico may need to grind their way through tight games rather than blow teams away.
South Korea will probably bring the highest attacking ceiling in the group. Son Heung-min, Lee Kang-in, and Hwang Hee-chan give them quality and variety, while Kim Min-jae anchors the defence.
But South Korea have carried defensive concerns into the tournament, especially when opponents attack the space around their wing-backs. Their opening game against Czechia could shape the whole group.
Czechia arrive with a clear identity. They will defend compactly, compete physically, and lean heavily on set-pieces. Patrik Schick gives them a proper focal point, while Tomas Soucek and Ladislav Krejci make them dangerous from dead balls.

Who are the key players in Group A?
México: Raúl Jiménez
Mexico need a reliable finisher, and Jimenez remains the obvious focal point. If he takes chances early, Aguirre’s side should control the group.
South Africa: Lyle Foster
Foster carries a lot of attacking responsibility. South Africa can compete in games, but they need him to give their counters a proper end product.
South Korea: Son Heung-min
Son may be heading into his final World Cup, and South Korea still look to him for leadership, movement, and decisive moments in tight games.
Czechia: Patrik Schick
Schick gives Czechia their biggest open-play threat. He will dominate their shot volume and make them dangerous even when they spend long spells without the ball.
What are the best bets for Group A?
Mexico to win Group A looks the obvious starting point. The price does not offer huge value, but the draw has given them a favourable route, and two games in Mexico should strengthen their position.
Their opener against South Africa feels important. If Mexico win that game, they can approach the South Korea match from a position of control rather than pressure. That makes them the most logical group winner.
The more interesting argument sits behind them. Czechia are shorter than South Korea in the group winner market, but South Korea may offer the better upside if they solve their defensive issues.
South Korea to qualify is likely to appeal if the price lands in a sensible range. They have more attacking match-winners than Czechia and should carry more threat against South Africa in the final round.
Czechia remain dangerous because their set-piece threat gives them a route into every match. Schick to score against South Korea or South Africa could be worth a look once player markets settle.
South Africa are difficult to support outright. They have enough organisation to stay competitive, but they may need Foster to find form quickly, and their opening assignment could hardly be tougher.
