Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso appeared uncertain over the future of Enzo Fernandez in his press conference ahead of his first Premier League game in charge against Fulham on Monday.
Alonso also spoke highly of his team’s fitness levels and attitude ahead of the new Premier League season, with the Blues not featuring in European competition this campaign.
Chelsea frontman Joao Pedro, who missed out on the World Cup squad for Brazil, was spoken about with plenty of admiration by Alonso, who highlighted his growing leadership and influence in such a young squad.
‘We’re looking forward to it’
“We feel ready,” Alonso told Sky Sports.
“We have prepared the whole pre-season with some players from the first day, other ones coming later, but the desire, the ambition, the hunger to start the Premier League is already in the building each training [session] and we’re looking forward to it.”

Fernandez’s status as a Blue
Alonso commented on whether Fernandez will still be a Chelsea player by the end of the summer transfer window, saying: “Enzo is a Chelsea player. He’s a top, top player.
“He’s training really well since he started 10 days ago with the team, very integrated.
“We’re happy with him and he’s getting ready for Monday.
“He’s training really well, good attitude and that’s what we want. He’s trying his best to prepare for the kick-off of the Premier League.
Pleased with transfer business
“I’m really happy. I think we’ve made many right choices,” Alonso added.
“Good balance in terms of quality, personality, maturity, different stages of career.
“We are in a good position, I’d say.
Great player and personality
“We talk a lot with Joao. He’s not just a great player, he has a great personality,” Alonso said, regarding the growth in Pedro’s game and character.
“His development as a great player and leader is very noticeable every day, in each game.
“He has this focus and desire to have a great season, scoring goals but helping the team.
“I’m very happy and impressed with his personality. Now we need to help him reach his goals.”
