Unai Emery knows all about extraordinary Champions League nights at the Camp Nou. Unfortunately, the last time he was involved in one, he was on the wrong end of arguably the competition’s most infamous comeback.

Nearly a decade after Barcelona overturned a 4-0 first-leg deficit against his Paris Saint-Germain side, Emery returns to Catalonia with an Aston Villa team threatening to upset Europe’s established order.

Villa have won all three of their Champions League matches this season. They’ve scored 12 goals, conceded just three and sit second in the 36-team league table, behind only defending champions PSG.

Their European campaign has included a 6-0 demolition of Fenerbahçe and a 3-1 victory over Viking, while a recent 2-1 Premier League win against Manchester City demonstrated that Emery’s side can compete with the very best.

However, Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Fulham and last week’s 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat at Bournemouth have interrupted that momentum.

Barcelona, meanwhile, have experienced a rather dramatic fortnight of their own.

Hansi Flick’s side suffered consecutive defeats against PSG and Real Madrid, conceding six goals across those two matches. Their response was emphatic: a 6-1 thrashing of Alavés on Saturday, with Raphinha and Lamine Yamal both scoring twice.

That result kept Barcelona top of La Liga and served as a warning to Villa ahead of Tuesday’s encounter.

The Catalans have scored 11 goals in their opening three Champions League fixtures, but defensive injuries have left Flick relying on unfamiliar back-line combinations.

Villa’s attack, spearheaded by Nicolas Jackson, will certainly fancy its chances.

The Senegal international has made an excellent start to life in Birmingham, scoring eight goals in his first 12 appearances. He was on target again against Fulham and will be central to Villa’s hopes of springing an upset.

There is also a fascinating historical footnote. Aston Villa defeated Barcelona 3-1 on aggregate to win the 1982 UEFA Super Cup, with the decisive second leg played in January 1983.

More than four decades later, the stakes are different, but the opportunity to make another statement against the Spanish giants remains.

Barcelona are favourites, and understandably so. Yet Villa’s perfect European record and Emery’s tactical experience mean this should be considerably more competitive than the odds suggest

What are the best betting tips for Barcelona vs Aston Villa?

Barcelona to win and both teams to score

Barcelona’s attacking quality makes them difficult to oppose at the Camp Nou, particularly after Saturday’s 6-1 demolition of Alavés.

Hansi Flick’s side have scored 11 goals in their opening three Champions League matches, while Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Anthony Gordon provide different threats across the front line. Their movement and ability to exploit space could cause Villa considerable problems.

However, Barcelona’s defensive record is far less convincing. The Catalans have conceded in nine of their last 10 matches across all competitions, with injuries forcing Flick to experiment with his back four.

Villa have scored 12 Champions League goals themselves, and Nicolas Jackson has been in excellent form. The visitors should create opportunities against Barcelona’s makeshift defence, but I expect the hosts’ superior attacking firepower to prove decisive.

Over 3.5 goals

Barcelona matches have rarely been short of entertainment this season. Their three Champions League fixtures have produced 16 goals, including a 4-2 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain.

Saturday’s 6-1 victory over Alavés offered another reminder of their attacking potential, but it also extended their run without a clean sheet to five matches.

Aston Villa have been similarly productive in Europe, scoring 12 times in three matches. Their 6-0 victory over Fenerbahçe was particularly impressive, while the 3-1 win against Viking demonstrated their ability to create chances against organised opposition.

Both teams favour attacking football, and Barcelona’s defensive absences could encourage Villa to play with greater ambition. With so much attacking quality on display, over 3.5 goals looks an attractive selection.

Lamine Yamal anytime goalscorer

Lamine Yamal continues to make extraordinary achievements look routine, and the Barcelona winger enters Tuesday’s match with another Champions League record within reach.

The teenager has scored 13 goals in the competition, drawing level with Kylian Mbappé’s record for the most Champions League goals scored before turning 20. One more would put him out on his own.

Yamal scored twice in Saturday’s victory over Alavés, underlining his confidence heading into this encounter. His ability to drift inside from the right, combine with Barcelona’s midfielders and create shooting opportunities makes him a constant threat.

Villa’s defensive structure will be tested by Barcelona’s movement, particularly when Yamal isolates Ian Maatsen or attacks the space between the left-back and centre-back. With the youngster in excellent form, he is my preferred player selection.

Barcelona predicted lineup and team news

Formation: 4-2-3-1

Predicted XI: Joan García; Cancelo, Gerard Martín, Cubarsí, Balde; Rodri, Pedri; Yamal, Fermín López, Anthony Gordon; Raphinha.

Hansi Flick is dealing with significant defensive injuries ahead of Tuesday’s encounter. Jules Koundé, Andreas Christensen, Eric García and Xavi Espart are all expected to miss out, leaving the Barcelona manager with limited options across his back line.

João Cancelo and Alejandro Balde are candidates to occupy the full-back positions, while Pau Cubarsí and Gerard Martín could form a makeshift central partnership. Frenkie de Jong is another option in defence if Flick decides to experiment.

Dani Olmo remains sidelined with an adductor injury, while Roony Bardghji is also unavailable. However, Barcelona emerged from Saturday’s victory over Alavés without any reported fresh concerns.

Lamine Yamal, Fermín López and Anthony Gordon should support Raphinha in attack, with the Brazilian expected to retain his central role after scoring twice at the weekend.

Aston Villa predicted lineup and team news

Formation: 4-2-3-1

Predicted XI: Suzuki; Cash, Lindelöf, Pau Torres, Maatsen; Kamara, João Gomes; McGinn, Manzambi, Buendía; Jackson.

Unai Emery has fewer injury problems than his opposite number, although Amadou Onana, Matteo Ruggeri and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are all expected to miss the trip to Spain.

Nicolas Jackson should lead the attack after continuing his impressive start to the season with another goal against Fulham. The Senegal international has scored eight times in his first 12 appearances for Villa.

Leon Goretzka returned to the starting lineup against Fulham, but João Gomes could be preferred alongside Boubacar Kamara to provide additional mobility and defensive cover against Barcelona’s midfield.

John McGinn, Johan Manzambi and Emiliano Buendía offer different attacking options behind Jackson, while Alysson could also feature if Emery wants greater pace in wide areas.

Barcelona vs Aston Villa prediction

Aston Villa have been one of the standout teams in the Champions League this season, and their perfect record deserves considerable respect.

Emery’s side have demonstrated their attacking quality throughout the league phase, while their recent victory over Manchester City showed they can compete against elite opposition.

However, Barcelona represent a particularly demanding challenge.

Flick’s side have been devastating going forward, and Saturday’s six-goal performance against Alavés suggests their confidence has returned following defeats against PSG and Real Madrid.

Barcelona’s defensive injuries offer Villa genuine encouragement. With Jackson in excellent form and Emery capable of identifying weaknesses in the opposition, the visitors should create opportunities.

But containing Yamal, Raphinha, Gordon and Fermín López for 90 minutes is another matter entirely.

Villa’s defensive organisation will be crucial, particularly when Barcelona move the ball quickly through midfield and stretch the pitch with their wide players.

I expect the visitors to score and make this a competitive encounter, but Barcelona’s attacking depth and home advantage should ultimately prove too much.
