Northern Ireland begin their Nations League campaign with a difficult trip to Tbilisi to face Georgia on Friday evening.
Michael O’Neill’s side are back in League B after winning promotion last time around. They have landed in a competitive Group B2 alongside Georgia, Hungary and Ukraine.
Georgia enter the competition looking to put a poor World Cup qualifying campaign behind them. Willy Sagnol’s team lost five of their six qualifiers, but their results in 2026 have been much better.
They are unbeaten in four this year. Georgia have beaten Lithuania and Bahrain while drawing with Israel and Romania.
Northern Ireland’s recent results have been mixed. They beat Guinea 1-0 and drew 1-1 with Wales before losing 3-1 to France in June.
The bigger concern is the absence of Conor Bradley. Northern Ireland’s captain remains sidelined following knee surgery, leaving O’Neill without one of his biggest attacking threats.
And with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia waiting at the other end, this is a serious first test back in League B.

Georgia to win
Northern Ireland earned their promotion and deserve their place at this level, but Friday represents a considerable step up.
O’Neill’s side won a League C group containing Romania, Belarus and Cyprus last time around. Georgia offer a different challenge, particularly in Tbilisi.
Sagnol’s team are unbeaten throughout 2026 and have conceded only three goals across their four matches this year. They beat Lithuania 2-0 away before recording another 2-0 victory over Bahrain in their most recent game.
Northern Ireland are also missing Bradley.
His absence matters at both ends of the pitch. Since the beginning of 2025, Northern Ireland have averaged 1.5 goals per game with Bradley compared to 0.7 without him.
O’Neill still has plenty of promising young players, but Georgia possess the standout attacking talent in Kvaratskhelia and home advantage should count for something.
This probably won’t be comfortable, but Georgia look capable of edging it.

Northern Ireland rarely turn difficult away games into shootouts.

Georgia’s 2026 results tell a similar story.
Their wins over Lithuania and Bahrain both finished 2-0, while their draw with Romania ended 1-1. The exception was a 2-2 draw against Israel.
O’Neill knows the danger Georgia possess and Northern Ireland are unlikely to arrive in Tbilisi intent on turning this into an end-to-end game.
Bradley’s absence also takes away some of their attacking threat.
A narrow Georgia victory fits the recent numbers better than a high-scoring contest.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to score or assist
There aren’t many mysteries surrounding the player Northern Ireland need to stop.
O’Neill has already described Kvaratskhelia as “one of the best in the world” when discussing the challenge awaiting his side in Tbilisi.
Georgia will naturally look towards him when they need someone to break Northern Ireland down.
That could be particularly important if O’Neill sets his team up compactly. Northern Ireland have shown they can frustrate stronger opponents, so Georgia may need an individual moment rather than simply overwhelming them.
Kvaratskhelia can provide exactly that.
Taking the goal-or-assist market also gives us two routes. He can finish the move himself or create for the likes of Georges Mikautadze.
In a game where we’re expecting Georgia to have the better chances, backing their biggest attacking threat to contribute directly to a goal makes sense.

O’Neill has been positive about Northern Ireland’s preparations despite the demanding schedule ahead.
The Northern Ireland boss said:
“The squad is in great form.”
He also described his young group as having a “really positive atmosphere” after the opening training sessions in Belfast.
O’Neill knows promotion brings a significant increase in difficulty.
Discussing a group containing Georgia, Hungary and Ukraine, he said:
“I don’t think we should be frightened by that.”
He expects the games to be extremely difficult but described the campaign as a “great challenge” for his developing squad.
There is also a practical challenge this month. Northern Ireland play four Nations League matches in 11 days, meaning O’Neill will have to manage a young squad carefully.

Sagnol has kept the core of his Georgia squad together for the start of the Nations League.
The hosts have had a difficult period since their breakthrough appearance at Euro 2024, particularly during World Cup qualifying.
However, their results this year suggest some stability has returned.
Georgia are unbeaten in all four of their 2026 matches and have conceded only three times during that run.

Northern Ireland should make this awkward.
O’Neill’s young side have shown enough defensively to suggest Georgia won’t simply roll through them, and the visitors will be comfortable playing without the majority of possession.
The problem is finding enough threat at the other end.
Bradley’s continued absence is significant, particularly when Northern Ireland’s scoring numbers have dropped considerably without him.
Georgia aren’t exactly free-scoring themselves, but they have the best individual attacker on the pitch in Kvaratskhelia and enter the Nations League unbeaten in 2026.
That could be enough to separate two fairly well-matched sides.
