Leeds United have completed the signing of James Trafford from Manchester City in a club-record deal worth an initial £40 million, with the England goalkeeper putting pen to paper on a five-year contract at Elland Road.
The transfer surpasses the £35.5 million Leeds paid Hoffenheim for Georginio Rutter in January 2023, underlining the club’s ambition ahead of the new Premier League season.
Trafford arrives after making 17 appearances for Manchester City last term, keeping eight clean sheets while helping the club win two trophies.
Trafford says goodbye
Before his move was officially announced, Trafford paid an emotional tribute to Manchester City and the supporters who watched him progress through the academy.
“To everyone at Man City, it was my dream to play for the first team from when I moved away from home at 12, and it makes me so proud to have achieved that last season, whilst also winning two trophies in the process,” Trafford wrote on Instagram.
“The fans singing my name was something I dreamt of when I went to the Etihad growing up through the academy.
“I wish nothing but the best for the club for the future.”

Securing goalkeeping stocks long-term
The transfer represents a significant statement of intent from Leeds, who have invested heavily to strengthen a key position as they prepare for another demanding campaign.

While Manchester City part ways with a talented academy graduate, Leeds have secured one of the country’s most promising young goalkeepers in what is now the biggest signing in the club’s history.
