Manchester City’s English Premier League title challenge suffered another setback on Wednesday as Pep Guardiola’s side were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton & Hove Albion at the Etihad Stadium.
It was the third successive league game in which Man City have dropped points, leaving their hopes of catching leaders Arsenal in serious doubt.
The match began well for City. In the 41st minute, Erling Haaland converted a penalty. It was his 150th goal for the club, after VAR intervened to overturn the referee’s original decision following a foul on Jeremy Doku.
But Brighton hit back just after the hour mark when Kaoru Mitoma struck a fine equaliser, leaving the points shared and City’s fans frustrated.
Pep Guardiola shares his thoughts
Man City head coach Pep Guardiola was visibly animated during parts of the game, especially around the penalty decision. He was booked after angrily protesting to match officials, and later stood by his reaction.
“I was complaining why it wasn’t a penalty. And after it was – I was right,” he said when asked about his touchline protests.
After the match, Guardiola did not hide his frustration at missed opportunities. He repeatedly pointed to City’s wastefulness in front of goal despite dominating possession and creating a large number of chances.
“I like a lot the way we play, many new players and many new things but we don’t score goals,” he said. “Too many clear chances and all the people up front, unfortunately we could not score. Scoring goals is part of doing your job.”
City finished the game with numerous shots but only a handful on target. It was an outcome that reflected their inability to turn pressure into goals.
Guardiola stressed that it was a collective problem up front that cost them the win. “It’s not just one, two, three players, it’s all the people up front,” he explained.
The result leaves Manchester City five points behind Arsenal, who have a game in hand. The gap could stretch even further depending on Arsenal’s result against Liverpool on Thursday, January 8.
For a side accustomed to winning titles, drawing three in a row is rare under Guardiola and serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing Man City’s squad this season.
