Matchweek 7 of the 2026-27 Premier League season came to a close as Tottenham beat Coventry City 3-1 on Monday, October 20.
It’s been a tough start to the season for Tottenham, who until Monday night had not won a single Premier League match, with three draws and three losses. Their only other win of the season came against Charlton in the Carabao Cup.
Having had a blockbuster summer transfer window, Spurs have been desperate to get a result that reflected their spending.
With Omar Marmoush on the scoresheet and James Maddison returning to the starting XI, Roberto De Zerbi will be pleased.
Maddison marks return with goal
Maddison made his first competitive start for Tottenham since May 2025, and he did it in style, opening the scoring just 14 minutes into the game.
Coventry equalised a few minutes into the second half, before new signing Marmoush scored his first Spurs goal just nine minutes later.
Ben Davies made it 3-1 deep into stoppage time, securing all three points for Spurs.

Kulusevski makes welcome return from injury
Dejan Kulusevski was brought on late in the game, marking a welcome return after 526 days out with injury.
Speaking about the decision to bring the winger on, De Zerbi explained that he also wanted to give the fans something to celebrate.
“I did it for the fans [brought Kulusevski on]. We needed the support of the fans. They are fantastic. They suffer too much in the last two or three years.”
Kulusevski also spoke on his return, saying, “I will tell everyone about the journey. It’s been an amazing journey even if it’s hard sometimes; hard is beautiful.
“I’m so grateful I had to experience it, and now I’m ready to play football.
“I see myself a little bit differently now. I think I’m a different man now, same guy that wants to play football but a little bit smarter, so I’m happy,” he said to Sky Sports News after the win.
Maddison eager to make up for lost time
Maddison, who made his first competitive start since returning from injury, also spoke to Sky Sports, saying:
“I have so much more to give for this club. I’m 29 and I still have plenty of years left. I have self-belief and plenty of qualities that can help us in this league.
“I spoke to the gaffer about that this week and feeling like it was the right moment for me to go back into the starting XI after a stop-start start to the season.
“I just wanted to play well and to show my qualities and what the team has missed in the last 18 months since my last start.
“The gaffer asked me to play and wanted to enjoy watching me from the side, so hopefully I did that. A goal like that is always nice.”
