France head into the tournament with one of the strongest squads in the competition, giving Didier Deschamps plenty of options across the pitch.
Much of the focus will naturally fall on Kylian Mbappe. The France captain remains the team’s biggest attacking threat and is capable of changing a tight game in an instant.
Senegal will know that limiting his influence is likely to be one of their biggest challenges.
Further support is expected to come from the likes of Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise, with both players capable of stretching defences and creating opportunities in wide areas.
Their ability to isolate defenders could be important against a well-organised Senegal side.
In midfield, Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga are likely to provide the balance between defensive stability and ball progression, allowing France to control large periods of possession.
France have quality throughout the squad and will expect to create chances. The main question is how quickly they can break down what is likely to be a disciplined defensive setup from Senegal.

Senegal arrive at the World Cup with experience, pace and a few players who can hurt France if they are given space.
Sadio Mane remains the name that stands out. He may no longer be at his Liverpool peak, but he is still Senegal’s biggest attacking figure and the player France will not want running at them in transition.
Nicolas Jackson is also likely to have an important role. He gives Senegal a focal point up front and can help them turn defensive spells into attacks when they win the ball back.
Out wide, Ismaila Sarr offers pace and direct running. That could be useful if Senegal look to attack the space behind France’s full-backs.
At the other end, Kalidou Koulibaly should lead the defence. His experience will be vital against a France attack packed with speed and movement.
Senegal are unlikely to dominate the ball, but they do have enough quality to make this awkward for France if they stay compact and use their forwards well.

I think Senegal are good enough to make this uncomfortable for France.
That’s not exactly a bold statement. France rarely blow quality teams away at major tournaments, especially in opening matches. They tend to be controlled rather than spectacular, and that often leads to tighter games than people expect.
Senegal won’t be intimidated either.
This is a team packed with players who have faced elite opposition throughout their careers. They won’t arrive expecting to simply defend for 90 minutes. They’ll believe there are moments in this game they can exploit.
The question is whether they can do it often enough.
For me, France have too many players who can change a game in an instant. Kylian Mbappe is the obvious one, but he’s far from the only threat. Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise and the runners from midfield all give France different ways to hurt opponents.
I can see Senegal staying organised for long spells. I can also see them creating one or two decent chances of their own.
Over the full 90 minutes, though, I trust France more.
Their squad is deeper. Their big-game experience is greater. When matches are decided by fine margins, those things matter.
Senegal should make a contest of it. I just think France find a way through in the end.
